What is the WAT for IIMs?
The Written Ability Test (WAT) is an important part of the selection process used by the IIMs and several top B-schools in India. After the CAT exam, shortlisted candidates must appear for WAT as part of the WAT–PI rounds. The test evaluates a candidate’s thinking ability, clarity of expression, and written communication skills, which are essential for managers and future leaders.
Why Do IIMs Conduct the WAT?
The WAT helps IIMs assess qualities that a multiple-choice test cannot measure, such as:
- Clarity of thought
- Logical reasoning and argument-building
- Ability to structure ideas under time pressure
- Depth of knowledge and analytical ability
- Written communication skills
Since managers often need to write reports, justify decisions, and communicate complex ideas, the WAT is considered a strong indicator of a candidate’s readiness for an MBA program.
What Kind of Topics Are Given in the WAT?
Topics are usually contemporary, analytical, or reflective. Common categories include:
- Current affairs (economy, politics, global issues)
- Social issues (education, equality, technology, ethics)
- Business and economy (startups, reforms, industry trends)
- Abstract topics (“Red is the new blue”, “Time is a currency”)
- Case or situation-based prompts
Most IIMs give students 20–30 minutes to write 200–300 words.
How Is Your WAT Evaluated?
Evaluators typically look at the following parameters:
- Content Quality: Is your argument strong, relevant, and backed by logic or examples?
- Structure & Coherence: Does your writing flow logically from introduction → body → conclusion?
- Depth of Analysis: Have you gone beyond surface-level statements?
- Language & Grammar: Is your writing clear, grammatically correct, and free of jargon or fluff?
- Originality: Is the response genuinely your own thinking and not memorized content?
